A Local Guide to the Medina

The riad sits in a quiet derb at the edge of the old medina, five minutes on foot from Jemaa el-Fna and a world away from its noise. Here is how we would spend a day nearby.

Start early at the Ben Youssef Madrasa, before the light gets hard and the crowds arrive. The cedar carving in the courtyard is the best in the city.

Walk north through the souks to the dyers' quarter, then stop for coffee on a rooftop café above the spice square. Ask for it with orange-blossom water.

For lunch, find a grill stall near the Mellah and order whatever is on the coals. In the afternoon, the Bahia Palace and its gardens are at their quietest.

End the day back on our roof with mint tea as the call to prayer moves across the city. It is the best seat in Marrakech, and we are not neutral about it.
